Michaella McCollum Peru for drug
Michaella McCollum, the ‘burrier’ with the giant bow, spoke about how her conviction in Peru for drug trafficking changed her life
Tired of living in rural Northern Ireland, Michaella McCollum longed to spend her days in the sun and from party to party without imagining that her 20-year-old dream would turn into a nightmare that would lead her to fall into the illicit world of drugs. and the excesses.
If something’s voice is too good to be true, it probably is. This is the lesson that the British Michaella McCollum Connelly learned the hard way when she was 20 years old after being arrested on August 6, 2013, along with Melissa Reid, a compatriot of hers of the same age, at the Jorge Chávez International Airport when trying to take out of the country 11 kilograms of cocaine, valued at that time in more than 2,000,000 dollars.
Michaella had been convinced to transport drugs from Peru to Spain by a man she met in Ibiza, one of the Balearic Islands known worldwide for its lively nightlife. She and Melissa had never seen each other until the day they were put on a flight to Lima, without imagining that they would have to spend more than six years in an Ancón II maximum security prison after pleading guilty to drug trafficking.
Although the Criminal Procedure Code of Peru punishes this crime with a custodial sentence of 18 to 15 years, in 2016 the British were released early and, since then, Michaella McCollum has been open to sharing her story as part of the ‘Perú Dos’, recounting how it has changed since it became infamously known as the ‘burrier’ (also known, in popular language, as a mule or burro) of the “giant bun”.
Michaella McCollum tells her story about her
In a new documentary on the BBC Three digital channel divided into five episodes, Michaella, now 28 and a mother of two, recounts in her own words what her life has been like since then, beginning with her origins as the youngest of 10 siblings in a town in rural Northern Ireland. One day she decided to leave all that behind and bought a one-way plane ticket to Ibiza, a decision she regrets to this day.
The debauchery and excesses were the daily bread on that island of the Spanish archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, so he came to the conclusion that, if he wanted to stay there longer, he had to generate a regular source of income for what was achieved a job in a bar, but apparently the drinks were not the only thing he had to serve since he discovered that between drinks, drugs were also sold.
In the short preview shared by BBC Three on her YouTube channel, Michaella McCollum pointed out that in the end, she ended up accepting this reality and admits that she crossed a big line. “But in Ibiza, the big lines are everywhere and for me, that between good and bad had become kind of blurred,” he added, reflecting that now it seems more difficult for him that way of thinking of certain people towards drugs, even though she herself had it for years.
But, as in all good stories, a tall, dark, handsome stranger named Davey made an appearance for her and, while they were high on acid, asked her to travel to Barcelona to pick something up for him.
The day Michaella McCollum’s life changed forever
One day, around 5 or 6 in the morning, McCollum Connelly said that Davey came running to look for her and told her that she had to make the trip to Spain that she told him about to pick up her package. “He made it seem as if everything would be like walking in the park, that they were going to take care of me there, that they would give me a lot of money, and that when I came back I would have the best time of my life,” said the young woman, who already imagined everything What would I do in Ibiza with all that money?
However, everything changed at the last moment. Michaella McCollum recounted that she was told that she was going to go to Mallorca where she would meet another girl, that she was going to accompany her and that the two would travel to Lima together. She was confused because I thought they had told me Barcelona, ” she specified.
“I didn’t know where Lima was, I didn’t even ask what country Lima was in because I didn’t want to look stupid so I thought it was somewhere near Spain and it wasn’t going to be such a long trip. Then I saw the huge arrow pointing to South America and I thought: Shit”, ends the preview of the documentary High: Confessions of an Ibiza Drug Mule produced by the digital channel BBC Three in which Michaella McCollum spoke with Thea de Gallier about this experience.
